By adjusting the backstay tension, we can control the tension of the forestay, adjust the pre-bend of the mast and control the power of the mainsail making the boat sail faster and point higher. For racing sailors these are essential requirements, but they are also important for cruising sailors even if we are not too concerned about small speed increases. A balanced boat will be much easier to control, not only when hand steering but also when using the autopilot. Less work for the autopilot means less power consumption. In stronger winds a flat headsail will cause less heel and that makes a passage more comfortable. For boats with in-mast furling, a straight mast is the best for avoiding problems when furling and unfurling so any adjustments to the mast bend have to be quick and easy to adjust.
Selden HTI Integral Hydraulic Tensioners are elegant, easy to install and provide quick and accurate tension adjustments and are designed for ease of use, reliability and long service life. Selden HTI tensioners feature anodised aluminium cylinders available with either clear or black anodising and a marine grade stainless steel rod. A built-in pressure gauge allows accurate and repeatable adjustments and is located at the top of the cylinder for easy viewing. The tensioners have a long stroke making it easy to try out different rig trim settings or adjust mast rake. Adjustable maximum pressure allows safe and accurate operation on any boat. The automatic two-speed gear function switches from high gear to low gear at a predetermined pressure to quickly achieve the required tension just a few cycles of the pump handle.
Built-in pressure gauge for precise tension settings and repeatable adjustment. The gauge is located at the top of the cylinder for easy viewing. |

The maximum pressure can easily be adjusted to individual requirements avoiding the use of marks or tape on the rod. To release the pressure, simply turn the pressure valve knob. |

Adjustment of pressure level for high to low speed operation - Selden HTI operates at high speed until a set pressure and then automatically reduces to low speed for fine adjustments. |
